Sundargarh: In response to serious allegations regarding illegal coal mining and smuggling activities in the Sundargarh district of Odisha, the state government has dispatched two ministers to investigate the situation firsthand.
Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, along with Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia, conducted inspections at various sites suspected of illegal coal extraction within the Gopalpur forest range in the Hemagiri block.
During their visit, the ministers examined approximately twelve coal mining locations and engaged in discussions with officials from the district's mining and forest departments.
Reports indicate that illegal mining is taking place in several dense forest areas, including Gopalpur, Telendihi, Ratansara, Jamkani, and Bhogra-Kachhar.
"We have inspected several coal mining sites. Our administration is committed to both action and accountability. We will take necessary measures against illegal mining operations," Minister Jena stated to the press, while Singhkhuntia mentioned they would inform the chief minister about the current situation.
Earlier this month, Deputy Speaker and Talsara MLA Bhabani Shankar Bhoi urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to intervene and halt the alleged exploitation of mineral resources in the tribal-heavy Sundargarh district.
In light of these concerns, Sundergarh District Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan initiated raids on local factories and coal washeries.
Additionally, a nine-member enforcement team from the Mines department has confiscated around 10,000 tonnes of illegally mined coal.
Western Range IG Brijesh Rai confirmed that the police have filed three cases related to this issue.
"Further actions will be determined based on expert opinions, as mining operations involve various technical considerations," he added.
